I suspect all of these bills result from the misunderstanding that conservation easement cause taxes to be shifted to non-conservred property. The fact is that almost all conserved land demands so little town services that the reduced taxes they generate are a net casflow positive to the town so they actually reduce the amount needed to be raised. That fact needs to be better communicated to both misinformed legislators and to the public.

Very interesting to know there is more to the monitoring than just getting there and looking and to realize that interactions and fielding questions can be part of it. The care you take to get accurate responses must reassure everyone who deals with UVLT!

Thank you! Around 50% of the Upper Valley Land Trust's annual property visits are done by volunteers each year - this is my taste of what they do for us! I hope that by sharing my learning curve - and it may be a wobbly one at times - others will feel encouraged to stretch their own experiences. The only 'expertise' required is the desire to be outside!

What a great write up Anna explaining from a first person perspective this critical aspect of CE monitoring. I'm the Conservation Restriction Monitoring Specialist with The Trustees of Reservations in MA and used to work as the Boundary Program Manager for the Appalachian Trail Corridor Monitoring program. Thanks for sharing
