Sunday Stroll - Cossingham Road Farm Trails

Sunday, June 19, 1pm

Cossingham Road Farm Trails, Cossingham Road, Norwich, VT

The next hike will be on on the Cossingham Road Farm Trails; the trailhead is on Cossingham Road a short distance west or left off Bragg Hill Road in Norwich, Vermont.

We will do the east loop of about 1.3 miles and the west loop of about 2.5 miles. This is a very comfortable hike; the grades are moderate to easy, the footing is good and, for much of the way, the trail was cut for cross country skiing and is wide. The width encourages side-by-side conversation as we pass farm pastures and wind through mixed forests. There should be some wildflowers to find and identify and, perhaps, some unexpected treat such as the painted turtle I passed last week on a trail far from water or a sighting of the porcupine whose den is along the trail. I hope you will join us; you'll have a good time and do something good for your body and mind.

Federal Conservation Programs Could Face Budget Cuts

USDA-funded conservation programs facing drastic cuts include the following:

·  The USDA conservation operations budget.

·  The Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP).

·  The Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP).

·  The Grasslands Reserve Program (GRP).

·  The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

·  Funding for the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA/HIP), also known as Open Fields, would be completely eliminated.

According to Jennifer Mock Schaeffer, Farm Bill coordinator for the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, " Cutting funding from these programs will eliminate opportunities to help private landowners and operators sustain their operations and secure [...] important wildlife habitats on privately owned lands.”
