UVLT Land Protection Guidelines

The mission of the Upper Valley Land Trust is to help people conserve land. As a community-based land conservation organization, UVLT’s land protection priorities derive from the residents of the region we serve. We work closely with local conservation commissions, neighborhood groups, landowners and civic leaders to identify and protect our region’s most special places.

All projects UVLT takes on should be related to one or more of its purposes as a community land trust:

  • To aid in the conservation and careful stewardship of productive agricultural and forest land;
  • To protect lands of vital importance to water supplies and water quality;
  • To protect lands of regional significance for recreation, scenic beauty, or historic preservation;
  • To cooperate with local governments, citizens, and organizations in meeting land use needs in the Upper Valley and in meeting the public, collective, and long-term needs of its citizens;
  • To promote stewardship through public education and technical assistance.

In determining which conservation projects to undertake, UVLT must analyze the level of community support and potential public benefit; the nature of the resources to be conserved and the stewardship obligations to be conveyed; the amount of staff time and financial resources required; conformance with UVLT policies and strategic goals.
